What to Expect in Your First Reformer Pilates Class

If you’ve ever walked into a Pilates studio, glanced at the reformer, and thought “that looks… complicated” you’re not alone.

The reformer can feel intimidating at first. Springs, straps, a moving carriage… it is a lot to take in. Many first-timers assume it is only for people who already know what they are doing.

That is not the case.

At Ember Pilates, we see new clients every day. Within one class, that initial hesitation usually turns into “wait… I actually love this.”

First Things First: You Do Not Need Experience

Let’s clear this up right away. Reformer Pilates is designed to be supportive, no matter your starting point.

It is one of the most effective ways to build strength because the machine guides your movement while adding resistance. You are not just going through the motions. You are feeling the work in a really intentional way.

If this is your first time, we typically recommend starting with a Reformer 101 workshop or a private session.

In that setting, you will learn:
• How the machine works
• How to adjust the springs
• What the straps and footbar are used for
• The foundational movements you will see in class

If you decide to jump into a group class first, that is completely fine. We will still walk you through the machine, explain safety, and your instructor will keep an extra eye on you throughout class.

What Class Actually Feels Like

Your first class will include a mix of movements that target your entire body.

A few you might see:
• Footwork to warm up and connect to your legs and core
• Bridging to activate your glutes and posterior chain
• Arms in straps where you will immediately feel your core kick in
• Side lying leg work for hips and outer glutes

One of the biggest differences from mat or gym workouts is the spring resistance.

You will feel it right away, especially in movements like arms in straps, where your abs have to stabilize against the pull of the springs. It is controlled, but challenging in a way that feels very different from lifting weights.

And yes… there may be a little shaking. That is normal.

A Few Quick Tips Before You Come

Go slower than you think you need to. The reformer is not about speed. Moving with control will help you get more out of each exercise and stay safe.

Avoid yanking on the straps. The springs create resistance, and quick, jerky movements can throw off your control. Think smooth and steady.

Most studios, including ours, require grip socks for safety and stability. If you do not have a pair yet, we have them available at the studio.

If you ever feel unsure during class, it is completely okay to ask for help. A simple hand raise or small wave is all it takes for your instructor to come over and guide you.

The Biggest Surprise: It Is Challenging, But You Will Get It

Almost every first-time client says some version of:

“That was harder than I expected… but I picked it up faster than I thought.”

That is the magic of reformer Pilates.

It challenges you quickly, but it is also very intuitive once you start moving. Within one class, most people go from feeling unsure to feeling confident enough to keep going.

It is not about doing it perfectly. It is about learning how to move in a more connected and intentional way.

It Is Not Just About Strength

Yes, reformer Pilates will make you stronger. But it also improves posture, stability, coordination, and body awareness.

Depending on the class style you choose, it can be more strength focused or more restorative.

At Ember, we offer both, including restore focused classes that support mobility, flexibility, and a slower, more intentional pace.

Who Is Reformer Pilates For?

Honestly, just about everyone.

• Someone looking to build real strength
• Someone who wants a workout that feels more intentional
• Someone who has never loved the gym
• Someone easing back into movement
• Someone who wants both challenge and support

Reformer Pilates meets you where you are, but it is designed to help you grow from there.

Final Thoughts

Your first class might feel unfamiliar, but it should not feel overwhelming.

You will be guided, supported, and coached the entire way through.

And by the end of class, you will probably be thinking, “okay… I get the hype.”
